Welcome everyone from the class of '78. I hope you all have a healthy and prosperous New Year, 2008!! It's been thirty years since our
graduation - can you believe it? This is a good time to remember your classmates, and take the time to send an update or
photo to post on the Class web site.
Take a walk down Memory Lane as
you browse news and photos of your classmates. On the Class News page
you can see news and photos, and look over a list of "lost"
classmates. Can you help locate anyone? If you've enjoyed catching up on your classmates,
don't forget they are also wondering what has happened to you. Send in your own news and photos
to share with the rest of us. You can send news and photos directly to
Elizabeth Quinn to post on the web page. Or, you can contact
either Betsie or Julie, the class reps, at their addresses below.
Hillcrest has a need for a gymnasium to be used for phys ed classes, sporting events, school functions
and community activities. The vision is to build a new Hillcrest School Gym and name it after Steve Beacham, the Hillcrest teacher and coach
who died of cancer in 2005. Find out how you can support this project.
Betsie attended Kent Academy through 9th grade, moving on to Hillcrest for the rest of her high school years, and
graduated with the Hillcrest class in 1978. She currently lives with her husband Dave, son Austin and daughter
Avery just east of Toronto. Dave is a technician with Xerox Canada and Betsie works part-time for the municipal library.
Their non-work hours are spent court-side encouraging Austin and Avery in both athletic and creative endeavors. Betsie
has pursued teaching opportunites as part of her involvement with women's ministry, and has been invited to speak at several
women's conferences and retreats over the past five years. Betsie returned to Nigeria with her original family in November 2002.
Highlights included visiting Egbe, KA, Niger Creek and Hillcrest, as well as a trip to Yankari. Betsie's parents and sister
Barb live west of Toronto in the Niagara area; her brother Don and sister Marjorie are in the Lauderdale/Coral Springs area.
Makes for annual trips between Toronto and Florida! Write to Betsie.
Julie (Bowers) Lassiter
After I graduated from Hillcrest I attended Mississippi University for
Women and graduated in 1982 with a BA in Math. I went to Nigeria for a year
to live with my parents and teach, first preschool (a disaster!) and then I
taught English at the College of Education in Minna. That was much better,
in spite of the fact that my only credential was being a native speaker of
which I was the only one in the department.
Libbi Burney (now Hamilton) and Kate High (Dunson) were in Nigeria for that
year also and we saw each other a few times. Libbi and I travelled back to
the States together via Sweden, Finland and a few other countries. At that
point I started graduate school at Purdue University and graduated in 1985
with an MS in Math Sciences.
I live in Anderson, S.C. with my husband John, son Will (15) and
daughter Lora (9). My sister Holly lives here and my parents are just
over the state line in Georgia. I teach math part time at Clemson
University. My brothers Mack and Richard are in Atlanta and Toccoa,
Georgia, respectively, both less than two hours away so we get to see
each other pretty often.
A new Hillcrest Alumni website is up and running. Nancy (Hutchins)
Libbey, Class of '74, has procured the crestrobin.org domain and is working on bringing back the site.
African Chop is a place where you can find, prepare and
enjoy delicious African foods! Visit my web site to search for African restaurants and markets,
browse the glossary and African links, or find some new recipes.
Paul Trigg and his
brother Mark both attended Hillcrest until 1981. Paul currently lives in the
West Midlands of England with his wife and three children.
Take a look at Tim Young's very imaginative paintings on his
Timouth web site. His work, featured in the Great Northern Gallery in Grand Marais, Minnesota,
is described as noisy, colorful, creative and fearless. And his paintings are not just on
canvas but also tables, cars, bowls, etc. This site is well worth checking out!
Tim was from the class of '78.
Fred Zobrist has a web
page on Educational Excellence. The purpose is to provide a
forum where questions concerning educational excellence and education reform
can be raised and discussed. Anyone with an interest in education, or with kids
in the school system, should check out this site. Fred attended KA and Hillcrest,
graduating in 1970.
Phil Nelson's
web page tells all about DOVE - "Development, Orphanages and Vocational
Education". Phil is executive director of DOVE.
Roger Bohnhoff's webpage
features photos from Cameroun, Australia, and even some diving photos. Roger
attended Hillcrest from 1980-1984, living at Elm House. He is now an
independent computer consultant in Denver, Colorado.
Mark Bowers from the Hillcrest Class of '73 helped design and build the
recycling center at the Sunnyvale Solid Waste Department, featured at this
site. Mark is the Solid Waste Program Manager for City of Sunnyvale. Friends
have permission to call him "Mr. Garbage."
