Our Class Reps - Betsie Smith and Julie Lassiter

BetsieBetsie (Campion) Smith.

Betsie attended Kent Academy through 9th grade, moving on to Hillcrest for the rest of her high school years, and graduated with the Hillcrest class in 1978. She currently lives with her husband Dave, son Austin and daughter Avery just east of Toronto. Dave is a technician with Xerox Canada and Betsie works part-time for the municipal library. Their non-work hours are spent court-side encouraging Austin and Avery in both athletic and creative endeavors. Betsie has pursued teaching opportunites as part of her involvement with women's ministry, and has been invited to speak at several women's conferences and retreats over the past five years. Betsie returned to Nigeria with her original family in November 2002. Highlights included visiting Egbe, KA, Niger Creek and Hillcrest, as well as a trip to Yankari. Betsie's parents and sister Barb live west of Toronto in the Niagara area; her brother Don and sister Marjorie are in the Lauderdale/Coral Springs area. Makes for annual trips between Toronto and Florida! Write to Betsie.

Julie's familyJulie (Bowers) Lassiter

After I graduated from Hillcrest I attended Mississippi University for Women and graduated in 1982 with a BA in Math. I went to Nigeria for a year to live with my parents and teach. Libbi Burney (now Hamilton) and Kate High (Dunson) were in Nigeria for that year also and we saw each other a few times. Libbi and I travelled back to the States together via Sweden, Finland and a few other countries.

After returning to the States I started graduate school at Purdue University and graduated in 1985 with an MS in Math Sciences. I taught for two years at Anderson College in Anderson, S.C. and got married in 1986 to John Lassiter who still teaches history there. Went back to grad school and graduated from Clemson University in 1990 with a PhD in Math Sciences.

I still live in Anderson, S.C. with my husband John and daughter Lora (12). My son Will (18) has just started as a freshman at the University of Florida. My sister Holly lives here and my parents are just over the state line in Georgia. I teach math part time at Clemson University. My brothers Mack and Richard are in Atlanta and Toccoa, Georgia, respectively, both less than two hours away so we get to see each other pretty often. We would love a visit from any of you anytime!

Write to Julie.

I went to Kent Academy through 8th grade, and then Hillcrest for 9th and 10th grade. In 1976 my family came back to the States and I finished high school in Pennsylvania. After that I went to Penn State, where I met my husband Paul, although we did not get married until 1989. I worked in the nutrition and food service fields until my boys were born. They are now huge teenagers, 14 and 16 years old.

In 2007 my family moved from New Hampshire, where we lived for the past 10 years, to Endicott, New York. We have settled into our new community, and are enjoying being closer to our families and having a lot of mountains all around us. Both my boys are in high school now, ending a five year stretch of homeschooling. It's amazing how quickly kids grow up! I spend my days keeping the household in order, driving the boys all over creation for their activities, and working as much as I can on my web sites.

Speaking of time, it's hard to believe thirty years have passed since graduation. We've all had some really interesting journeys since then, and I think it's important to stay in touch with each other and remember where we came from. I love hearing from all of you and having the chance to put your photos and updates here for every one else to share. If you have anything you would like to post on the page you can email it to me.
